Baby Products I Love: Mustela's Vitamin Barrier Cream

Way before I got pregnant, I already told J that changing our baby’s diaper is his duty. My sense of smell is so sensitive that even perfumes make me gag so I thought what more the smell of poop. Of course, once our little Queen B arrived and J has to go to work I have no choice but to do it myself.

Hundreds of diaper changes later, I still don’t like it (Who does?!!) but it is no longer the dreadful task I once though it was. Well, for now. As our baby will be eating solids regularly soon her poop will now become more adult-like in smell and form. Things will be interesting for the coming months for sure.

Today, I want to talk about our nappy change routine and a product we regularly use during diaper changes, Mustela’s Vitamin Barrier Cream.

According to my trusty What to Expect the First Year’s book, the term diaper rash describes numerous skin conditions that affect the diaper area of a baby. Take note that the term diaper rash is also a little misleading. It is not really the diaper that causes the rash on your baby’ skin but the materials trapped by the diaper. It is believed that a baby’s delicate skin becomes irritated with continuous exposure to moisture. When wet diapers rubbed against our baby’s skin, friction develops that result in a red, shiny rash on exposed areas. Substances in stool and urine can also irritate a baby’s sensitive skin. The rash can also be allergic reaction to diaper wipes, laundry detergent especially for those using cloth diapers, soap, lotion, and other things that touches our baby.

Like most moms, I believe that prevention is better than cure so I (Also J, of course, since he is actually doing most of the diaper changes) make sure that our little Queen B’s diaper area is clean and dry after every nappy change. Our routine goes like this:

Step 1: Prepare all the nappy change paraphernalia which includes changing pad, baby wipes, a small container with water and cotton (a simple hack we got from my brother and his wife), mild cleanser, diaper, and lastly, our Mustela’s Vitamin Barrier Cream.

Step 2: Spread the changing pad under our little Queen B.

Step 3: Unfasten the diaper. Survey the scenario and if there is poop we remove most of it using the baby wipes, carefully avoiding the genitalia area. Adjust the diaper so that the unsoiled portion is now directly under the genitalia. When there is no unsoiled portion, we remove the diaper and place a piece of absorbent cloth underneath our baby’s bottom.

Step 4: Wipe the genitalia area with a wet cotton ball from front to back. Repeat this step as many as needed with a new cotton ball each time. Never re-use a soiled cotton ball. Since we have a baby girl, we are extra careful since females are more prone to urinary tract infections than males.

Step 5: Place a small amount of the mild cleanser on a wet cotton ball and wipe the genitalia area from front to back again. Wash with another wet cotton ball.

Step 6: Place a new diaper then air dry the diaper area or pat dry with a clean cloth/diaper. While air drying, we wash our hands with alcohol.

Step 7: Once dry, coat the bottom with a thin layer of the diaper rash cream.

Step 8: Close the diaper snugly.

So far, we only had a few (like less than 5 times) incidents of diaper rash and all of them did not last long. J and I believe this is because of the combined effect of our diligent diaper change routine and Mustela’s Vitamin Barrier Cream.

My nappy change must haves!

I will not lie. We actually have another diaper rash cream. It is part of the newborn care package we got from the hospital. Since we don’t like to waste things, we decided to also use it on our baby a month after she was born. It is quite good but whenever we see indications of a diaper rash we immediately use Mustela’s Vitamin Barrier Cream. After a few hours or on the next nappy change, our little Queen B’s bottom is clear of any red, shiny rash.

Mustela’s Vitamin Barrier Cream boasts of a three-fold skincare for nappy area as illustrated below.

It is formulated using 98% ingredients of natural origin that are fragrance-free and do not contain preservatives. It can be used from birth on (we did) as most of Mustela’s products.

Another thing to love about this product is it being part of an eco-friendly brand. All Mustela bottles are 100% recyclable and any cardboard used is sourced from sustainably-managed forests. It does not only protect my baby but also the world she lives in.

We first got our Mustela’s Vitamin Barrier Cream as part of the free samples pack from Mustela at Miss Chiqui Brosas’ childbirth class. We also received a free sample 10-mL tube when we bought a set package of Mustela products at MommyMundo Bazaar 2014. We haven’t used up all of it yet but we already bought a 100-mL tube last weekend along with another Mustela product. Most of our little Queen B’s toiletries are from Mustela.

Thanks to Mustela's Vitamin Barrier Cream, our little Queen B is diaper rash free.

I learned that if a product already works for you there is no need to try another brand. We sort of got an unpleasant experience with changing brand just so we can save which ended up us spending more. I will blog about this on my future posts. The Mustela line of products did not fail us so J and I decided that we will continue to patronize the brand. So expect more Baby Products I Love from Mustela.
